The Philippines competed at the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The Games were held from July 28 to August 12, 1928, in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Four athletes participated, with two in athletics and two in swimming. The Philippines gained their first Olympic medal with the bronze gained by Teófilo Yldefonso in the 200m breaststroke.

[edit]The Games were held from July 28 to August 12, 1928, in Amsterdam, Netherlands.[1] The appearance marked the Philippines second appearance in the Olympics, with the first in 1924.[2] Dr. Regino Ylanan was the picked medical officer for the delegation during the competition.[3] Boarding house accommodation was provided to the Philippines for the athletes representing the country.[4]: 236 The official representing the Philippines for the 1928 Olympics was picked to be James Pruitt Maxwell.[4]: 373
Opening ceremony
[edit]The Philippines was 34th out of 46 nations which participated in the ceremony.[5] No flag bearer represented the country,[4]: 88 while an invitation was sent out to Charles Boissevain.[4]: 91

Athletics
[edit]Anselmo Gonzaga is a popular sprinter, setting a national record for the fastest 100m dash, putting him 4th in the world. He was picked to participate in the 1928 Olympics for 100 meters and 200 meters. Gonzaga was eliminated however in the first round of the 200m dash and in the quarterfinals for the 100m dash.[6] Simeon Toribio was picked to participate in the Olympics for being a popular high jump participant. In the event, he placed fourth, missing third place in a jump-off.[7]

Swimming
[edit]Tuburan Tamse participated in three events, namely the 400m freestyle, the 100m freestyle, and the 1500m freestyle. Tamse, however, did not start the 100m freestyle, only participating in the two events.[8] Teófilo Yldefonso participated in two events, namely the 200m breaststroke and the 100m backstroke. However, Yldefonso did not start the 100m backstroke. He eventually won the bronze medal, making him the first Filipino to win an Olympic medal.[9] Yldefonso participated in the event on August 8, he participated over the following days, passing the heats and semi-finals, he later was introduced to four other swimmers, winning the bronze medal.[10] After the win, the International Olympic Committee recognized the Philippine Amateur Athletic Federation as the national governing body for the Olympics.[11]
